Difference between the PYP Arts (PYPA) and Arts Special (AS)

General Introduction: At Fountainhead we encourage learning through arts. Arts are strongly connected to every area of learning. Different people display their learning through the different form of arts. Arts help in the development of fine and gross motor skills. We offer the following art subjects for enhancing learning:
  1. Visual Arts
  2. Dance
  3. Drama
  4. Music
Key Differences:
What is PYP Arts? Performing Arts has both compulsory and optional components; which are woven into the curriculum as essential areas of learning. According to IB guideline, we structured our curriculum on basis of two strands:
  1. Creating
  2. Responding
We focus on their creativity and idea execution during PYPA classes. We assess their understanding of the concept and application of a concept. We do teach them skill but we do not emphasize on 'learning the skill' during PYPA classes. We can also add a line saying that we do more of inquiry-based units. PYP Arts Streams:
  • Visual Art
The Visual Arts expectations are creative processes, elements of Art and Design, Visual Arts in society, reflection and appreciation. Each of these components is addressed separately, although in practice they are interactive and interrelated elements.
  • Music :
The music scope and sequence framework identify the major expectations considered essential in the PYP. These expectations are performing, creating and composing, notation, listening, and appreciation. The performing component is organized into sub-components of singing and playing instruments. Each of these components is addressed separately, although in practice they are interactive and interrelated elements.
  • Drama :
The drama scope and sequence framework identify the major expectations considered essential in the PYP. These expectations are creative exploration and expression, technical incorporation, performance, personal and social development, reflection, evaluation and appreciation and drama in society. Each of these components is addressed separately, although in practice they are interactive and interrelated elements.
What is Arts Special? Arts Special is totally Skill base program. This program is offered from Grade 3 onwards. Then they can choose any art form of their area of interest form the given option. They will learn that particular skill for the whole year, and at the end of the year, they will perform in the Arts Festival. Arts Special Streams:
  • Visual Art
  • Drama
  • Dance
  • Bharatanatyam
  • Vocals
  • Keyboard
  • Percussion (Drum and Tabla)
  • Guitar
Average Time spent in PE/PS activities:
3 classes (45 Minutes) in a week in each stream. 3 classes (45 Minutes) in a week in the AS stream selected by the student.
Dear Parents, Fountainhead School gives a lot of emphasis to arts and sports. To this end, the school offers a variety of art segments and sport segments for students to choose in AS and PS. The school envisions that every child will choose one art and one sport specialty and pursue this stream consistently over a few years to achieve a certain level of competency in it. AS is available as an option from Grade 3 onward and PS from Grade 2 onward.  Kindly refer to the choices available for your child’s grade and have consultation with your child before filling out the form.  You can submit the form only once. If you still want to change the preference later, you will need to send an email to surat@fountainheadschools.org. However, such requests will be put at a lower priority over those who have filled their preference through the form.
  • Kindly fill up both the AS & PS selection form. (It will be sent through email only)
  • You need to mark two preferences in case the first preference is oversubscribed.
  • We will try to expand the offerings wherever the demand is high but there will be some limitations. On the other hand, in the case of offerings where there are few takers, we may have to remove some offerings.
  • In case there is an oversubscription (more interested students than seats available) then confirmation will be given in the following order:
  1. Priority will be given to the students who were in the same segment since last year and have participated regularly with enthusiasm.
  2. The allocation will be done by draw of lots (applies to both AS & PS) for e.g. if 10 students are interested, but we have provision for only 5 seats, then we will do a draw of lots.
  • Where there are new offerings for a grade, a brief description has been added. In case you wish to know more, please write to us at surat@fountainheadschools.org
  • If the form remains unfilled, AS / PS selection will be allocated where possible, otherwise the school will assign any of the options based on availability.
  • The AS fee will be included in the fee installment that is paid in September.
